Scott's experience stretches back to the Chessie Steam Special of 1977-78 and the Chessie/Family Lines Safety Express of 1979-81. In 1982, Scott began a long relationship with the Norfolk Southern Steam Program and played a major role in the rebuilding, operation, and maintenance of the Norfolk & Western Class J #611 and the Norfolk & Western Class A #1218 as well as the Southern #4501 and the Savannah & Atlanta #750. He has since managed several extensive projects, notably the wreck repairs of the Nevada Northern #93 in 1995-96, making it the only locomotive in the modern steam era to be rebuilt to operation following a head-on collision. He also facilitated the #93's operations at the 2002 Winter Olympics while serving as the interim director of the Nevada Northern Railway Museum and is a regular seminar speaker at railroad museum and tourist railway conferences.
G. Mark Ray has been a member of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum since
1978. After becoming active in train service in 1981, he was promoted to
Engineer in 1987. He has since been named Road Foreman of Engines and also
serves on the board of directors. He has a degree in engineering from the
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He has worked in the power
industry for almost 25 years, where he has developed a working knowledge of
Autocad, Excel, GTStrudl, and other computer-based design and engineering
programs. This has allowed Mark to apply the power of computers to analyze
and refine many of the complex design issues facing today's owners and operators
of steam locomotives. He specializes in the engineering of new and
replacement parts as well as new designs and also in the production of Form 4
packages. He has already produced several Form 4 packages for Steam
Operations, and examples of the completed calculations are available. Chris Zahrt graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. During summer breaks, he worked for CSX Transportation’s Mechanical Engineering Department, Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (now Electro-Motive Diesel) and the Roundhouse Railroad Museum of Savannah, GA. Upon graduation, he became an Apprentice Toolmaker with Hamblen Gage Corp. of Indianapolis, IN, a manufacturer of high precision gages and special machinery for Allison Transmission, Rolls-Royce, Daimler-Chrysler, Caterpillar and other Fortune 500 manufacturing firms. He began volunteering for the Ohio Central, and was eventually offered a full time position as machinist. In 2005, he began working as a machinist for the Grand Canyon Railway before accepting a position with Steam Operations Corp. in 2007.
A former Chief Mechanical Officer for the Nevada Northern Railway, Lance Hunt has worked extensively with Steam Operations on many notable projects, including the wreck rebuild of Nevada Northern #93, tender frame and truck rebuild for City of Alamosa #169, and the boiler survey and mechanical inspection of Santa Fe #2912. He played a key role in the logistics and operations associated with the NNRy's #93 and cars at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Lance's extensive expertise in locomotive operations, maintenance, boiler and running gear repair, and crew training make him an invaluable player on the Steam Operations team.
Chicago resident Tom Mayer's locomotive experience stretches back to his years as a boilermaker and fireman on the Chessie Steam Special (#2101) and Chessie/Family Safety Express (#614). He has also played a key role in logistics projects for Steam Operations, including moving the CB&Q #4978 from Ottawa, IL, to Mendota, IL. His knowledge of overall locomotive repairs, maintenance, and operation allow him to play a variety of roles with Steam Operations.
Widely recognized as one of the country's top experts in non-destructive testing, Dennis Donovan offers the most accurate and advanced steam locomotive boiler testing available through Steam Operations. Dennis has tackled projects ranging from locomotive and marine testing through assistance with the recovery of historic maritime artifacts, including the CSS Hunley.
Steam Operations is proud of its association with Bernie Watts and his firm,
Backshop Enterprises. Backshop is dedicated to the manufacture, sales,
repair, and rebuilding of steam locomotive appliances, including air
compressors, governors, lubricators, injectors, dynamos, and operating valves. Lunar Tool LLC As one of St. Louis' most complete and experienced machine shops, Lunar Tool is able to provide Steam Operations an outstanding facility for machining and fabrication related to nearly every aspect of steam locomotives and turntables with an emphasis on running gear.
