Steam Operations Corporation

Specializing in Restoration of Steam Locomotives & Historic Railroad EquipmentSince 1978

Projects

Steam Operations Corporation's past projects include:

  • Norfolk Southern Steam Program locomotives #611 and #1218

Steam Operations president Scott Lindsay was an integral part of the famed Norfolk Southern steam program of the 1980s and 1990s that saw the return of J-class #611 and A-class #1218 to steam.  The NS program demanded reliability day in and day out from its locomotives and from its people, and being a key leader in the program gave Scott an almost unequalled opportunity to rebuild, maintain, and run mainline steam on a dedicated basis and also provided the foundations for Steam Operations Corporation.

  • Rebuild of Frisco #1522

Steam Operations Corporation was involved in the rebuilding of Frisco #1522 for the St. Louis Steam Train Association, including running gear repairs following a low-speed derailment.  The popular Baldwin-built Mountain-type locomotive was a fixture in Midwestern and Southeastern US mainline railroading for well over a decade until its retirement in 2002.

  • Restoration of Chesapeake & Ohio #2755

Located at Chief Logan State Park in West Virginia, Lima-built C&O Kanawha-type #2755 is an example of the museum-quality cosmetic restoration and preservation work of which Steam Operations is capable.

In its cosmetic restoration and preservation projects, Steam Operations strives to maintain as much of the original historic integrity and fabric of the equipment as possible while still working to preserve the object against degradation by the environment and other factors.

  • Engineered and built bearing boxes for GSMR #1702

One of Steam Operations' particular specialties is running gear repair and rebuilding, as evidenced by the engineering and construction of bearing boxes.

  • Restoration of Great Northern #2507

In another example of Steam Operations' dedication to the preservation of static locomotives, the Great Northern #2507 project represents the blending of preservation, restoration, and logistics - including the movement of the locomotive from Pasco, Washington, to Wishram, Washington.
